At 5:32 a.m. on December 14, adverse weather caused a widespread transmission power outage impacting approximately 14,200 FKEC member-consumers from Snake Creek Bridge in Islamorada through Marathon. Keys Energy customers were also affected. The cause of the outage was identified as a blown lightning arrestor in the Marathon Substation.
While crews quickly worked to replace the equipment, FKEC worked to switch power loads, restoring power to approximately 12,200 member-consumers by 7:22 a.m. Power was restored to all FKEC member-consumers impacted by the original fault by 8:50 a.m.
Florida Keys Electric Cooperative serves approximately 34,000 accounts from the county line to the Seven Mile bridge.
