Pole Removal at Sea Oats Beach Requires US 1 Night-Time Lane Closures
Starting June 12, 2023, Florida Keys Electric Cooperative contract crews will begin removing 37 out-of-service utility poles along the northbound side of US 1 along Sea Oats Beach in Islamorada, mile marker 75.5 to 73.5. Due to the proximity of the poles to the highway, northbound lane closures are required. However, to minimize the impact on traffic, contract crews will work at night, from 9:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m., Sunday nights through Thursday mornings for approximately six weeks.
Please drive safely around any roadside work, and keep your eyes on the road, not the work in progress. You can visit Florida Department of Transportation at www.fl511.com for real-time traffic information.
The pole removal is the last phase of the Sea Oats Beach Pole Relocation project which included moving the transmission system that was being threatened by beach erosion along the Atlantic shoreline to the other side of the US 1 between the Overseas Highway and a small side road on the bayside. This project is critical to maintaining reliable service throughout the Florida Keys.
