Transmission Upgrade May Impact Traffic

Florida Keys Electric Cooperative is currently upgrading transmission insulators from Marathon to Islamorada. In some cases, based on pole placement, a single lane closure on US 1 may be required to allow the necessary, safe distance to work on the energized 138,000-volt transmission equipment.

FKEC contract crews are doing their best to avoid interfering with traffic, but when necessary, the work is being done with as little impact on drivers as possible. Please drive safely around any roadside work, and keep your eyes on the road and not the work being done.

The insulator replacement project is part of FKEC’s ongoing storm-hardening efforts. By the end of the year, FKEC will have replaced 1,407 insulators on over 400 poles.

FKEC thanks you for your patience while we complete this vital upgrade.
