FKEC Equipment Repairs Require Single Lane Closures in Upper Keys

On August 13 and 14, Florida Keys Electric Co-op will conduct emergency repair work on one of the transmission lines that bring high voltage electricity into the Keys. The work will require a single lane closure northbound on US1 from approximately mile marker 92 to 94 on Tuesday, and mile marker 95 to 97 on Wednesday. The Extra High Voltage (EHV) work is scheduled to begin at 9:00 a.m. and will be completed as quickly and safely as possible that day (weather pending).

To maintain power service, FKEC’s specially trained EHV crew will conduct the insulator repairs while the 138,000-volt transmission line remains energized. The short closure of the outside lane is necessary to provide safe access to the “hot” equipment.

Recent annual inspections of our transmission equipment —the backbone of our power system— revealed an issue with insulators requiring these immediate repairs.

Please use caution around all roadside work, and when driving keep your eyes on the highway and not the linework overhead. FKEC appreciates your patience while we make these critical preventative repairs as safely and efficiently as possible.
